AUTOMATISM is an instrumental rock band from Stockholm, Sweden.
It's 1987 and three kids - Hans, Micke, and Jonas - age 14 - have once again hauled their music gear into the basement. It's one of many afternoons spent playing music and making grand plans for the future. Then, life happens.
Fast-forward 30 years and add long-time friend Gustav to the mix. It's another afternoon and another basement, nothing has been rehearsed, but the recording lamp is switched on. The result of the first take of that recording session was Standing Wave, the opening track of debut album From the Lake. Since then, that is the track they have used to open all live performances.
In 2012, Micke and Hans started playing together again in the band Kungens Män. Automatism formed in the spring of 2017 by Hans’ initiative, as a way to explore ways of mixing the improvised approach of Kungens Män with compositions and rehearsed song structures.
The music is based in psych rock, with some added kraut, progressive, and modal jazz elements. In 2018 their debut album "From the Lake" was released on Tonzonen. The follow-up album "Into the Sea" was released digitally in the summer of 2019 on Kungens Ljud & Bild, and on vinyl in January 2020 on Tonzonen. Their third full-length release on the label, "Immersion", was out in September 2020. On it, they collaborate with eminent musicians Per Wiberg on keyboards (Kamchatka, King Hobo, ex Opeth), Jesper Skarin on percussion (Vak, Gösta Berlings Saga), and Jakob Sjöholm on guitar (Träd, Gräs och Stenar). Most recently Tonzonen released a limited run of vinyls of their first ever live album, called “Live at the Psychedelic Network Festival”.
Automatism have toured in Sweden and Germany, alongside The Spacelords and Kombynat Robotron, and in 2019 they played the Psychedelic Network Festival together with Acid Rooster among others.
